OU Aviation Seminar - Foundations of Business Development

What: Foundations of Business Development is an introductory course designed to increase the awareness of professionals of business development terminology, processes, and strategies specific to the aviation and aerospace field. This seminar program prepares participants to identify and provide sound solutions to the business development process in order to be better prepared for taking on leadership positions and conducting successful campaigns.

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

- Identify the major participant roles for both the government acquisition team and a bidder organization

- Understand the different types of contracts and acquisitions

- Identify the major elements and explain the significance of the sections in a typical U.S. government request for proposal

- Describe the major steps involved in winning a government contract award

- Identify the components of a comprehensive capture plan

- Describe ethical concerns in the business development field

The format of this course is experiential to include various group exercises and discussions. Participants are required to complete pre-course assignments. An official OU Certificate of Completion and 3.0 CEUs will be granted.

Why: More than 1,100 aerospace entities operate in the state of Oklahoma, supporting 15% of all jobs. With the aerospace economic activity reaching nearly $44 billion annually, professionals need to increase their knowledge of business development as well as be able to network with professionals. This training is critical to the ongoing success and growth of this industry.

Instructor: Jeff Tyrcha, OU Extended Campus School of Aviation Studies instructor, has more than 25 years of experience working in the Aerospace and Defense industry in executive, business development, program management, and engineering positions. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a certified Acquisition Program Manager and Executive Officer at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Jeff has led business development campaigns of greater than $1B in total contract value. He has a B.S. in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University and a M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Jeff is also a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and the BAE Systems Executive Institute at the University of New Hampshire. In addition to his role as instructor, he serves as the deputy director for the University of Oklahoma in the institution's role as technical lead of the FA  A Center of Excellence for Technical Training and Human Performance.

Cost: $700 for OU faculty, staff, or students; $800 for the general public
